Iridoids are a large class of secondary metabolites that exist in various plants and selected animal species. Iridoids are naturally occurring monoterpenoids and are acetal derivatives of formic dialdehyde. Natural iridoids have the basic skeleton of the cyclopentapyran ring, which can be divided into 3 main types: iridoid glycosides, sever iridoid glycosides and iridoid acetal esters.

As the effective ingredients of natural medicines, iridoids have their main effects in the protection of the nervous system, anti-tumor effects, liver protection and other biological effects. Different iridoids have different biological activities and dose dependence due to their different structures.

Iridoids are unstable and degrade under both physical and chemical conditions, which hinders the study of their activity and function. With the continuous improvement of extraction methods and storage conditions, more and more iridoids have been discovered, and the research on their functions has become a new hot spot for natural products. Through analysis and comparative research on the structure and function of known iridoids, it is possible to better infer its main active functional groups and functional characteristics, and provide effective data support for chemical modification and new drug development.

The secoiridoids are a subclass of iridoids, which open a cyclopentane ring between carbon atoms C-7 and C-8. There are many types of iridoid structures. Among complex plant extracts, LC-MS can effectively identify them, especially when coupled to soft ionization sources, such as electrospray ionization (ESI). Quadrupole Time of Flight (QTOF) MS/MS allows for high precision mass measurements and tracking of ion fragments, which allows for good interpretation of the results and contributes to substance structure confirmation.
