Graphite is a naturally occurring form of crystalline carbon usually found in metamorphic and igneous rocks. It has the same chemical composition as diamond, but with two-dimensional lattice bonds rather than three-dimensional lattice bonds in diamond. Graphite is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity and has the highest natural strength and stiffness of any material. At the same time, it is extremely soft, cleaves with very light pressure and has a very low specific gravity. Because of these properties, it is widely used in pencils, lubricants, crucibles and foundry facings.
